The Different Types of Event Photography

Why event photography is important

There are many different types of event photography, and each type has its own purpose. PR event photography is used to promote or advertise an event or organization. Sports event photography is used to document or memorialize a sporting event. Party photography is used to capture the memories of a special occasion. Wedding photography is used to document one of the most important days of someone's life. Each type of event photography has its own unique set of challenges, but they all share one thing in common: they're important. Event photography is important because it helps us remember important moments in our lives. It helps us cherish those moments and remember them forever. Without event photography, those memories would fade away and be lost forever.

The different types of event photography

There are many different types of event photography, each with its own unique benefits. Here are just a few of the most popular types of event photography:

  1. Formal Event Photography: This type of event photography is perfect for capturing those important moments during formal events, such as weddings, balls, and business functions. Formal event photography usually involves using a DSLR camera and flashes to capture high-quality images.

  2. Candid Event Photography: Candid event photography is all about capturing natural moments as they happen. This type of event photography can be great for more casual events, such as birthday parties and family gatherings. Candid event photography usually involves using a smaller digital camera or even a smartphone to capture images.

  3. Action Event Photography: Action event photography is perfect for capturing fast-paced moments during sports events, concerts, and other dynamic situations. Action event photography usually involves using a high-speed camera to capture sharp images.

What to consider when choosing an event photographer

When choosing an event photographer, there are a few things you should take into consideration. First, what is the tone or feel you want your event photography to have? This will help narrow down your search for the right photographer. Do you want something more formal and posed, or are you looking for someone who will capture the candid moments? It's important to communicate your vision to your photographer so they can understand what it is you're looking for. Another thing to consider is your budget. Hiring a professional photographer can be costly, so it's important to figure out how much you're willing to spend before beginning your search. Once you have an idea of your budget, you can start looking for photographers who fit within that price range. Finally, take a look at the photographers' portfolios to get an idea of their style and see if it matches what you're looking for. Once you've found a few photographers whose work you like, reach out to them and set up a consultation to discuss your event and see if they're the right fit for you.

Professional event photographers know how to make the most of lighting and composition to create stunning images that will grab attention and get people talking. With their expertise, you'll be able to create photos that you'll be proud to share with your guests and on social media. Here are some idea’s on how to use your event images;

  • Any images you paid for during the event are yours to use for a blog post or marketing piece

  • After your event, post your images on social media to serve as a recap for both your attendees and those who were unable to make it (I offer images during the event to post ‘live’ on social media)

  • On social media, tag attendees of your event; this generates excitement and lots of engagement

  • Use the images for press articles, publications or on social media

  • If it's a regular event, you can use these images to promote your next event

Event photography tips and tricks

Event photography can be a great way to capture the memories of a special occasion. If you decide not to invest in a professional photographer this time then here are some tips to help you make the most of your event photography:

  1. Use a tripod - A tripod will help stabilize your camera and prevent blurry photos.

  2. Use a shutter release - A shutter release allows you to take photos without having to touch the camera, which can cause blurriness.

  3. Set your camera to continuous shooting mode - This will allow you to take multiple photos in quick succession, ensuring that you get at least one sharp photo.

  4. Be aware of your surroundings - Make sure there's enough light for your photos and that there are no objects that could obstruct your view of the subject.

  5. Take plenty of photos - The more photos you take, the better chance you have of getting at least one great one.
